10 cozy ways to celebrate with someone you love
The holidays have a way of arriving all at once. The decorations come out, the calendar fills up, and somewhere between the shopping list and the seating chart, the point of it all can get a little lost.
Here's the good news: the moments people remember most are rarely the big, elaborate ones. They're the small, warm, slightly silly ones. If you're spending the season with a parent, grandparent or older friend, here are ten easy ways to bring more joy and less stress to the table.
1. Bake something together (and call it "rustic")
Pick one simple recipe, like cookies, banana bread or a pan of something warm, and let them take the lead. Don't worry about perfect. The kitchen smelling like cinnamon is the whole point, and a lopsided cookie tastes just as good.
2. Go on a lights tour
Bundle up, grab a thermos of cocoa and take a slow drive at dusk to see the neighborhood lights. Let your passenger be the official judge and award prizes for "Most Cheerful" and "Most Likely to Be Seen From Space."
3. Swap stories
Ask about their favorite holiday growing up, the strangest gift they ever got or the song that always meant the season had begun. You may hear a story you've never heard before, and if you do, write it down. Those stories make wonderful keepsakes.
4. Write holiday cards by the fireplace (or the couch)
Put on some music, set out a stack of cards and make an afternoon of it. A handwritten note from them means the world to the person who receives it, and it's a lovely way to stay connected with friends and family near and far.
5. Build a playlist from their favorite years
Ask which holiday songs they love and which recordings they grew up with, then build a playlist together. Fair warning: someone may start dancing in the kitchen. Encourage it.
6. Make them the creative director
Decorating can be tiring, so let them direct from a comfy chair while you do the lifting. Tell them where the tree goes, which ornament deserves the spotlight and why Aunt Sue's questionable reindeer must be displayed.
7. Wrap gifts together
Tape is the real villain of the season, so team up. One person measures and cuts, the other tapes and ties bows. It's surprisingly relaxing, and it's good company.
8. Look through old photos
Pull out the photo albums or scroll through pictures on a tablet. Holiday photos from decades ago, complete with questionable sweaters, are a guaranteed source of laughter.
9. Make a little craft
Paper snowflakes, homemade ornaments or a simple wreath are all easy to do at a kitchen table. No artistic skill required, and the results are sweet enough to hang on the tree.
10. Keep the gatherings gentle
A smaller get-together, a lunch outing or a shorter visit with a quiet place to rest can be far more enjoyable than a big, busy day. A good rule of thumb: plan for connection, not perfection.
